Reducing CO₂ emissions
Steel production is highly energy intensive - Extended lifetime, reduced maintenance, improved operational safety, saves costs and reduces emissions.
With decades of experience protecting offshore assets in the North Sea, Jotun is now utilising our knowledge to offer long-lasting corrosion protection to the offshore wind industry.
A study by the Worldsteel Association, estimates that steel production is responsible for 7-9% of global emissions, representing about 3.5 billion tonnes of COâ‚‚ per year. While there are no accurate figures of the carbon cost of replacement steel, a 2015 DNV report estimates that 35% of all steel corrosion could have been avoided if the steel had better protection.
For nearly a century, Jotun has provided long-lasting corrosion protection for harsh environments, including offshore installations in the North Sea. By using our high-performing coatings, you can protect your assets against degradation and corrosion, while simultaneously reducing the demand for maintenance over the lifecycle, lowering emissions and shift towards a greener energy production.

Steel is, by volume, the most common engineering metal – and is known to easily corrode in many environments. In a recent report, preventing steel corrosion – and thereby reducing the need for more steel production – is highlighted as one of the keys to a more sustainable future.
Structural steel equipment, especially in the most severe climates surrounded by air pollutants and sea water, is under constant threat of corrosion. Jotun’s high-performing anticorrosive solutions have been engineered to increase asset lifetime and reduce maintenance – ensuring that your steel stays stronger for longer.
Jotun Baltoflake is ideal for industrial and offshore structures, as it is engineered to offer exceptional lifetime with minimal maintenance - even in the most extreme environments.
Jotacote Universal S120 is a high-build product with exceptionally high adhesion strength and flexibility – giving you unrivalled anti-corrosive properties.
With decades of experience from the North Sea, we provide unrivalled and long-lasting corrosion protection. Our solutions enable the shift into renewable energy production.
More than 65 million square metres of power installations are protected with Jotun’s premium solutions across more than 2000 locations worldwide. From offshore wind installations, splash zones to corrosion protection of facilities in extreme conditions, our proved long-lasting technologies are designed to meet the highest of industry standards and regulations.
Remarkably enough, a 0.3 mm coating is enough to protect assets from corrosion. However, there is a great thought behind this thin layer – as you can see for yourself in this video.
As a leading supplier of protective coatings to the offshore industry, our proven solutions have been specifically engineered to cope with the harsh weather conditions offshore. This includes products that offer long-lasting corrosion protection for steel exposed to atmospheric conditions, splash zones and for submerged structures. Our corrosion protection systems are prequalified for international offshore standards, such as NORSOK and ISO.
Jotun Baltoflake was applied on installations at the Norwegian continental shelf in the 1970s. In 2022, a third-party test on a steel section recovered from the splash zone of a decommissioned platform, which had been coated with Baltoflake, showed no rust or visual degradation after more than 30 years of maintenance-free service. In addition to exceptional performance, Baltoflake is a fast-curing solution that can reduce production time by up to 90 percent. And because it has only trace amounts of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), it helps fabricators comply with limits on VOC emissions. We are now offering the same extreme corrosion protection technology to protect installations in renewable energy projects, such as offshore wind.
